County students in grades 2 through 10 consistently score above the
national median in the reading and math areas of the Stanford 9
Tests.
• District students in all grade levels regularly rank at the top of
the state on the FCAT tests and Florida Writing Assessment.
• In 2000 approximately 61% of the county's graduates took the SAT
exam, which compares to only 46% in Florida. Sarasota's students
scored 56 points higher than other Florida seniors on both the
verbal and math sections and 35 points higher than the national
scores.
• Twenty-eight students from elementary through high school were
selected as Disney Dreamers and Doers for their outstanding
curiosity, confidence, courage and constancy.
• Typically, Sarasota has 3 to 4 times the number of National Merit
Scholars, based on twelfth grade population, than other Florida
counties.
• In 2000, district totals* for the Bright Futures Scholarship
Awards were: 140 Academic Scholars, 612 Florida Merit Scholars, 97
Gold Seal Scholars.
• Students consistently achieve statewide honors in science, speech,
debate, foreign language, math, music, journalism, yearbook,
cheerleading, athletic, and Academic Olympic competitions.
